There is something about gloves I dislike very much in a one on one with a mother.I will always use a glove when doing an oral exam on a baby, however usually find only a visual exam of a mother's nipples is necessary.I tend to go more by what she reports to me than by how they appear.I use good hand washing before and after and in the room so the client's awareness of good handwashing is also heightened with a new baby.I use a towel, cloth,or paper towel when handling containers of milk and gloves only when it becomes messy. I feel somewhat comfortable at this time with these precautions.Certainly there are times I will express a little colostrum when assisting a baby with latching on, I do have fleeting moments where I too wonder what everyone else is doing.Universal precautions does include all body fluids. We should definitely discuss this.
