Dear Anne: Excellent!!! Just a few comments that you may want to consider. 1. My understanding is that most babies will not latch on spontaneously until closer to 50-60 minutes after birth, so you may want to give a range. 2. Here in Ohio, we tell parents that babies should have a minimum number of stools equal to the number of days old they are up until day 5-6. (2 stools on day 2 ,etc.) 3. Emphasize that common is not necessarily the same as normal! As in, its common for new mothers to get damaged nipples--it is more a statement about the type of teaching the mother receives about putting baby to breast than it is about the "normalcy" of sore nipples. 4. I would recommend follow ups at 24 hour intervals until satisfactory gains for babies with large weight losses (I am aware of 2 babies who lost 1 lb in the first 3 days. One MD wanted to follow up in 1 week and the other waited for 10 days--not what I'd call conservative medicine!) Keep up the good work! Martha Grodrian Brower RD LD IBCLC Kettering, OH
