Cultural Resource Analysts is currently working on a project along the
Kanawha River in West Virginia where historic documents indicate salt
furnaces operated from 1797 to 1860. The remains of what may be a salt
processing furnace were encountered eroding from the river bank. The visible
remains consist of a partially intact stone wall, overlain by a lense of
reddened sand. We are currently looking for
additional references on the design and operation of antebellum salt
furnaces.

What kinds of archeological features should be expected, and what kinds of
operational support facilities would exist in association with the salt
furnace operations ?

Thanks in advance for your help!
