You all have probably noticed that there have been discussions on Lactnet re: certain products vs other products, etc. We as co owners are currently investigating the legal liabilities (ie risks of slander and libel) inherent in running a listserv such as this where products are openly discussed. Although there seems to be no precedent at the moment, internet law is changing and being formed as we speak, and we are learning more about this. We are making an effort to investigate this as fully as possible both for our own protection and for yours as members of Lactnet. For now, before we find out fully, you should all enjoy Lactnet and participate as fully in discussions as you see fit. When discussing a product by name, please preface your remarks with "In my opinion..." This advice was given to us by a legal colleague. In this way, each comment and belief belongs to the owner. It is not necessarily represented as truth. Everyone has been doing such a great job keeping discussions positive, and it has been a pleasure to read Lactnet messages every day. We are thrilled. We also admire the fact all remarks that have been made have been printable on the front page of the NY Times. You guys are a great bunch. More news as it becomes available...it is so interesting to think of all the ramifications of legalities. I think it is unlikely that anyone here, either co owners or members , would be sued, but none of us would want to be the first "test" case, and you still have to pay to defend yourself even if you are innocent.
