To Martha Brower, "Queen of Nutrition Trivia!"

I have a question I hope you can help with. What is the scientific
explanation for "protein spots" in newborns who are not getting adequate
intake? As soon as you get these babies feeding they disappear.

I tell my clients that "protein spots " tell us that the baby in using his
stores of protein and fat and that process causes more waste buildup in
the baby's body which we see as spots resembling hives. I tell them as
soon as baby is feeding better they will go away. I have to admit I'm
really winging it, though with my explanation. I've never been able to
find anything in print. Can you or anyone else help?
