POPE URGES SUPPORT FOR BREASTFEEDING

VATICAN CITY-Pope John Paul II said breastfeeding deserves promotion and
support worldwide, particularly in places where social and marketing
pressures have diminished the practice. The pope, addressing scientists and
experts at a Vaatican-sponsored meeting May 12, said breastfeeding is of
interest to the church because it deals with the vital interaction between
mother and child, and because it raises larger health and economic issues. He
said research has shown that breast-fed children benefit in two major ways:
receiving proper nourishment and protection against disease. In addition,
this way of feeding can create a bond of love and security between a mother
and child, he said.
