At least 3 years ago, Judy Hopkinson published a wonderful letter in JHL that nicely explained previous concerns about glass containers and politely but firmly debunked them. She also had comments about plastic, good and bad. Why not chekc it out? In my pracitce, I find that most mothers find single-ply plastic works well. HOWEVER< if they have a releative or day care provider who is concerned about odors (usually from the freezer or refrigerator compartment) that get into the milk (single-ply plastic is permeable to such odors, partiuclarly the strong ones like garlic, onion, and others) then I recommend use of two-ply bags, which do not seem to result in odor-invasion. A few mothers prefer to store in glass bottles. (When they say so, I pray--after they leave--that they are not afflicted with the terminal dropsy that has plagued me since adolescence!) Be aware that data are now out (late 1994 Biol Neonate article) that shows that storage in refrigerator up to 8 days results in milk less degraded than if stored in freezer.
