Karen, I agree that many moms need to use a bottle sometimes to maintain sanity. I suggest using an orthodontic nipple with a wide base and the hole in the top of the nipple (on the palate side), to minimize drips and reduce the baby's temptation to thrust the tongue against the tip of the nipple to avoid choking. That would not be good for mom's nipple should it become habitual! I like the wide base because it allows the baby to latch on with the mouth wide open like at the breast. I encourage moms to use as few bottle feedings as possible, and mix them up with fingerfeedings and cup feedings to get baby used to eating different ways. Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC
