cc: SPANBORD--ASUACAD ARCH --CMSNAMES From: Anita Cohen-Williams Subject: CALL FOR PAPERS - SHA 1996 Conference, Cincinnati Dr. Jack S. Williams, Nicole Newlands, and I would like to invite people to participate in a proposed symposium that we are organizing for the 1996 Society for Historical Archaeology meetings to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio, January 2-7, 1996. The title of the symposium is "Wider Horizons of Spanish Colonial Studies in Historical Archaeology". The purpose is to bring together papers that relate to Spanish colonial archaeology from a variety of viewpoints, including regional, national, and international perspectives. It embraces a diverse array of topics and approaches which reflect a number of different national, disciplinary, and theoretical orientations. Collectively, these papers point to the need to develop a field that envelops all this diversity, where the wider horizon of the Spanish Colonial experience will be recognized in all its geographical, social, and historical complexity. By including these papers in a single symposium, we are also seeking to avoid the problem of presentations with similar research interests being scheduled at the same time in different sessions. SHA membership is NOT a requirement for presenting a paper at the conference. Nor does one have to be an archaeologist. Our session encompasses both archaeology and historical material. If you are interested in participating, please forward the title and abstract (of 150 words or less), and the preregistration fee ($65 for SHA member, $125 for non-member, $35 for student member, $50 for student non-member) to me by April 24, 1995 (so that I can send it in by May 1). Students must submit a copy of a valid student ID card. Please make the check out to SHA '96. All presenters are required to read and affirm in writing the SHA ethics statement. If you are interested in participating in the symposium, I will send you by email a copy of the statement and you can send me a note on it. Please feel free to pass this notice on to all and sundry lists.
