Melanie Cabak and Mark Groover excavated part of the lot around a late nineteenth century black church in Illinois a few years back and came up with a surprising number of pharmaceutical bottles. One of their interpretations was that this represents the use of the church as a community clinic. I believe an article on the project is coming out in HA soon. Groover is in grad school at the University of Tennessee, and I believe Cabak is affiliated with the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology in Columbia, SC. They may have done some research on pharmacies and prescription drugs as part of this project. Also, you might take a look at Jean Howson's article on the archaeology of 19th century health and hygiene in NYC in _Northeast Historical Archaeology_, Volumes 21-22 1992-93.
