A few years back everyone was talking about adding lemon juice to syrup. I don't think there is any real proof that prebiotics, probiotics or acidification has any real benefit. What bee colonies really need is natural nectar and pollen in abundance. 

I think the problem lies in viewing bee colonies as some sort of livestock. Natural pasturage is probably better for them too, but with modern farming you have too many animals too close together and you have to feed them cheaply enough. 

Bailey felt that most beekeeping problems could be traced to the density of colonies being too high. I would add, keeping bees in unfavorable regions. Bees do poorly under various conditions, like cold damp weather, prolonged drought, &c.
