Many decades ago I was taught that the North American entomologists
followed the ESA common name protocol - adjective noun separation of
words.  So if there is an adjective modifying a recognized group, it is
separated: honey bee, alkali bee, sweat bee, bee fly, chicken louse,
cat flea.  Since a butterfly is not a fly, it is a butterfly so you
have swallowtail butterfly.
