Hi Pam, 
I have seen this a few times. Very gentle expression usually clears the blood within 1 or 2 expressions. The baby can bf or drink the fluid, however, the baby may vomit and or show some blood in the poops. The baby’s doctors and nurses should be made aware of the bloody discharge from the breast, so that they can take that into account.
The baby likely needs some breastmilk to drink, so I would encourage mom to gently express or even pump on very low, and offer any colostrum to the baby, even if a small amount of blood is seen. 
Of course, tell mother’s doctor as well, but as I said, I’ve seen it clear pretty quickly.  Hope that is the case for your client.
