I think the creep to 4-6 months and then 6 months came about because of the super early intro of solids and the impact that had on breastfeeding and milk supply.  Now 6 months is being preached to the extreme.  My niece  almost had a party on her baby's 6 mo birthday as she gave her "solids."  What ever happened to watching the baby?  Giving tastes?  Seeing baby grab and try? A couple of years ago there was a very excellent speaker on Gold who talked about solids.  I wish what he said that day could be written up and published!  In my family (sample size 26) we've had a range from 5 mo to 8 mo of baby showing signs of readiness.  Yes, we need to stop early intro because it messes up milk supply and then yes, we need to watch the baby.  Pat in SNJ
