At the recent California Breastfeeding Coalition one of the speakers suggested categorizing formula as "medicine" because , in a few instances, it is life saving just like medicine. Doesn't Baby Friendly require written orders for formula in hospital unless it's by request of the mother? Seems to me that having the same set of orders post discharge, modeled after WHO guidelines, would present an opportunity for us LC's to call the physicians to responsibility and consistency. Categorizing formula as medicine removes it from the perception that it is equal to breast milk and simply a lifestyle choice.
