Twenty years ago I had a call from the head gardener of a mansion a few
miles from me (Chantmarle) to say that a swarm had come from one of the
chimneys and, by banging on a sheet of galvanised iron, he had
persuaded them to come down into an apple tree in the kitchen garden,
whence I collected them. The late John Atkinson (author of Background
to Bee Breeding) used to live nearby and told me that until he left the
area in 1948 there were always bees in the chimney.

That's set me reminiscing! 43 years ago I was going out with a
red-headed girl living there! I recall her Mother's massive helpings
of strawberries she served up, and also the newts in the moat!
