Thank-you Beth and Pat. This situation has been eye-opening. It seems that I need to know the names of the good breast surgeons in our area and not count on the HCPs to refer on to a specialist. What do others do in such a case? When do you step between a mom and her physician and recommend a specialist? Or do you? If the breast is outside of the OB's expertise, is it others' experience that the OB's do the referrals? When I was lactating, I had a galactocele. My OB did the needle aspiration to determine if it was indeed milk in the cyst. Would this be considered outside his scope of practice? I think I need a class in what each HCP can be expected to know so that this does not happen again.
