As I explain to the moms I counsel and as you have mentioned, babies are used to being rocked and the movement when they are in utero. When born there is more activity in the daytime and as you mentioned mom's respond to feeding cues more readily. I tell new moms that in pregnancy their body was preparing them for when baby is born. I also mention to them that waking is good for babies brain development and give them a simple description of different states of sleep. Dr. Jane Heinig gives great lectures and has done a significant amount of research on the matter. It is hard for new moms to adjust but with some encouragement and great information from people as yourselves they can get through those sleepless nights that won't last forever.
