The American public is woefully uninformed when it comes to scientific issues. The reasons for this are at least threefold. First, they don't have the inclination to read up on current scientific research, preferring to get it in sound bites from the popular press. Next, much of cutting edge science requires extensive background knowledge even to get the drift of what is being discussed. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, qualified individuals seldom take the time to attempt to communicate what they are doing in laymen's terms so that the public can have a rough idea of where they are headed. This needs to be corrected if the scientific community wants to keep public confidence in what we are doing.
