Peter L Borst’s mail on 16th of this month was scornful of the use of pesticides by organic farmers and, by implication, organic bee keepers.
In Europe, Organic certification for honey bans the use of “chemically synthesised allopathic products” with the exception of “formic acid, lactic acid, acetic acid and oxalic acid and the following substances: menthol, thymol, eucalyptol or camphor (which) can be used in cases of infestation with Varroa jacobsoni.”
The use of any pesticides would result in the suspension for one year during which all wax in the hives must be replaced with new foundation which must come from organic production units.
Is the legislation in the USA very different?
