I have a mom of a 4 month old who's baby dropped 1lb. in a week. She has successfully nursed 4 other children without incident and has done the same this time until now. Milk quantity seems sufficient, she is able to pump 6 oz per pumping session which she does 3 times when working. The rest of the time, baby feeds directly. She's had an issue with her thyroid gland in the past and the MD's are thinking she is hyperthyroid and passing too much thyroid hormone to the baby thus making the baby hypothyroid (he was tested) so she was told not to breastfeed. She is pumping and saving her milk until we figure this out. The baby was given formula and is gaining well so problem solve right? No one suggested mom get her thyroid checked so she did on her own and results are pending. Has anyone heard of this happening? Doesn't sound right to me and mom does not wish to stop breastfeeding. Baby breastfeeds when with mom as expected, nothing different. She is on no meds, birth control but does smoke 5 cigs a day she says. Could only that many disrupt the fat content of her milk? Any suggestions, thoughts would be appreciated.
