Dear Friends: What do you all think? The CPSC is investigating at least 14 deaths over the past 20 years associated with sling-style infant carriers, including three in 2009. Twelve of the deaths involved babies younger than four months of age. Many of the babies who died in slings were either a low birth weight twin, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues such as a cold. <http://blogs.consumerreports.org/baby/infant-care/> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Contrast that with this:MedGenMed. <javascript:AL_get(this, 'jour', 'MedGenMed.');> 2003 Mar 26;5(1):36. The role of bath seats in unintentional infant bathtub drowning deaths. Thompson KM<http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=%22Thompson%20KM%22%5BAuthor%5D> . RESULTS: In-depth analysis of the unintentional bathtub drowning deaths of American infants aged 6-10 months for the years 1994 through 1998 revealed 40 infant drowning deaths associated with bath seats. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nikki here again: Now 40 deaths in 4 years seems to be a lot more serious than 14 deaths in 20 years.......but which device gets the most attention? I don't remember any huge fuss about infant bath seats. I could be wrong.....but shouldn't we be making public health advisories about infant bath seats too? Or is it just the power of the Internet that is splashing the news about slings everywhere, whereas the infant bath seat story was 7 years ago, before Twitter and blogs and such? What do you all think? warmly, Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI craniosacral therapy practitioner www.breastfeedingalwaysbest.com *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html To reach list owners: [log in to unmask] Mail all list management commands to: [log in to unmask] COMMANDS: 1.
