In Europe they do use higher volumes of fluids than we do in the USA. In the USA we tend to restrict fluids in the 1st week or two for VLBW infants to minimize the occurrence of a PDA and CLD (which the research supports). Once the infants are "feeders and growers" we increase the fluids. The current standard (per VON and CPQCC) is to push volumes up to tolerance, but most NICUs still consider 150 mL/kg/day as full feeds, and don't go above that. Nancy Nancy E.
