I'm with Christine, that poor stimulation has likely had more of an effect than thyroid levels. Also, since we know that mothers with lower supply whose babies can feed effectively, do feed much more frequently than every three hours, her schedule of expressing may not be adequate to improve things. Only if she is double pumping would it even come close - and since her production in 24 hours at this schedule is 8 ounces, maybe if she expressed more frequently in the daytime she could increase her daily output by several ounces. She may well be able to express nearly an ounce after just two hours, and that would be more likely to increase production per expressing over a few days of a more intensive schedule. Christine suggested trying to feed baby the expressed milk at the breast and I support that idea. Mothers usually enjoy working on supply a lot more when it involves having baby at breast than when it involves keeping company with a milk-removal robot. There is reason to expect the baby to get better and better at feeding, the more practice he gets. The quicker you can get all the extraneous stuff out of the picture, the happier everyone will be. Good luck to this mother, hope you will keep LN updated on her, Theresa!
