Hello, THanks to all who sent responses. I am still interested in others out there. Its great to see what others are doing. I wanted to point out that some were not aware of Dr. J Newman's recommendation to use glucose water (ideally mixed with colostrum) when colostrum is not adequate during the first 48 hours of life. Its in his book but, no, he does not have any references. But, nor do we have references for using formula although we all know the risks. By using small amounts of glucose water during this brief period of time when infants normally have stores of brown fat to use for energy etc prior to lactogenesis II should not impact nutrition in any way. But it does prevent dehydration. Sometimes a baby who get a little sugar water perks up and can nurse better thereby improving nutrition. The glucose water can also be used to more easily obtain pumped colostrum from the container. It should not be used for a jaundiced infant nor after lactogenesis II occurs (i.e. after day 2).
