Recently I consulted a mom of a 2 month old baby suddenly plagued with typical pain and blanching of the nipples after a very smooth breastfeeding experience in the first weeks. As we talked about it and I asked wether she has ever had problems with blood circulation, she mentioned that she recently was put on a beta blocker for high blood pressure called labetalol (trandate). In the drug description there was information about paraestesia associated with this drug and her complaints started right after she began using the drug. After a change to nifedipine that luckily was suitable for her situation the problem disappeared very quickly. So we are wondering if that was really the drug causing the vasospasms (mom didn't have any other factors such as problems with baby's sucking, trauma to the nipples and so on) - anyone had similar experiences? Mom's doctor and the lactation consultant she was working with (she is in another country, consulted me on a message board because we are speaking the same language) didn't have any information about drugs causing vasospasms.
