One of my Peer Counselors at WIC has 4 children.? The oldest, a daughter, was anemic and failure-to-thrive for years.? She nearly died three times.? New Jersey hospitals and New York City hospitals could not diagnose the problem.? Finally the family went to The Mayo Clinic. (By now they had 3 children.)? She was then diagnosed with congenital anemia and the other family members were tested.? No one else had it, but both parents carried the gene.? The little girl was treated (spleen removed) and she has been quite healthy since.? A fourth child was born and He had it too.? Was anemic and failure to thrive, but The Mayo Clinic monitored him and as soon as it was necessary, his spleen was removed, too.? He was much younger, but he did not have to go through the near-death illnesses.
