Liz: My moms tell me that Neosporin ointment, Lotrimin (or Monostat) cream, and 0.5% (1% if she can't get the smaller %) hydrocortisone cream work well. I instruct her to put a healthy squirt of each of the 3 creams into a clean small covered container and mix well. She can apply to nipple/areola area as needed after feedings. No need to wipe off before feeding. All of these medications are readily available OTC and inexpensive. Many of our OBs will tell the mother to call me for the "formula" if they feel she could use some APNO and all willingly prescribe the prescription version.
