Norma Ritter states, "Now I am confused :) Are you saying that everyone who has passed the exam is obliged to follow the SoP even if they are helping mothers breastfeed but are being employed only as (for example) an RN? What if they are helping mothers in a voluntary, unpaid capacity?" Norma, I said I was even confused after writing that post, but yes, I think that IS what I am saying. I don't know about the "volunteer status," but as an RN I know that the insurance people "cover RN's" when they are helping neighborhood children with a cut, bruise or whatever, as long as we are functioning inside the "guidelines" or "S of P" of our profession! I am assuming the same with IBCLC's.....Will your insurance stand behind you if you function OUTSIDE your Scope of Practice? I guess that might be opening an entirely "new can of worms," but my gut is telling me that if I am an IBCLC and even tho' I call myself a DBC (Dyad Booby Coach,) I am STILL obligated to follow the guidelines of IBCLC. Will a JD comment, please?
