Anyone else note that World Breastfeeding Week got woefuly little attention here in the US? No surprise there. I did note that in this mornings issue of USA Today, there was an article re: babies "being heavier" specifically over the last 20 years and that it does impact long term health. They talked about food being used for comfort and reward and to get them to quiet, and that it is so easy to encourage babies to take a little bit more out of the bottle. Finally in the last two sentences, it was mentioned that breastfed babies were less likely to be heavy and that doing so was protective against obesity later in life. WOW! Just this week I had a telephone call from a mom who offered 10 ounces at one sitting to her baby, I beleive a 3 week old. Her thought was that if she could take it why not? Pediatricians in our area tell our moms to offer 6-8 ounces by bottle after one month of age. After several generations of formula feeding we are fatter than ever - the conclusions really need to be drawn, but when?
