When you read through the articles about this baby, Riley, you will read how his mother "used glass bottles to feed her baby" for her milk. This baby obviously was NOT exclusively breastfeeding. Also, according to the one article, the state had gained custody before the mother walked out with the baby. There is obviously more to this than is being reported. If social workers have become involved (as is reported) then there are obviously multiple problems with this mother (and maybe other family members). The parents are not married (not that that matters) but that's just another red flag with this baby. The father was in agreement with surgery. Social workers are not brought in for absolutely no reason at all. I am often involved with new mothers and babies within the community and also work extensively with the Department of Children and Families on some cases. I have yet to ever see a case where social workers and DCF were involved where there isn't a risk of some sort. This young baby has an ongoing medical condition. It would be my guess that the medical doctors and nurses involved in all levels of this child's care (both as an inpatient and also as an outpatient) have cause for concern about this baby and family or they would not have involved social workers and certainly not the state. It takes a lot of work to remove a baby from it's parents' custody so my guess is that this involvement is necessary.Judges are not quick to remove children without just cause. This mother put her baby in a diaper bag and sneaked the kid out of the hospital. She put her child at risk with just that one action alone. This is a medically fragile child. Does that show good sound judgement? Of course it does not. If that is an example of how this mother reacts to situations, I can see why social workers would be concerned.
