I have to agree with Teresa Pitman that just because child protective services is called in does not mean there is a problem. I've seen CPS follow a family who did not have bed frames (their mattresses were on the floor), a family where the baby tipped over his walker and got a bruised forehead, and several other low risk situations. And I've seen them not get involved when they needed to. I've also known several mothers over the years be threatened with psychiatric "consults" in the hospital when they wanted to exclusively breastfeed their mildly jaundiced baby, or sign their baby out to go to a different hospital for more family centered care. I also second Rachel Myr's recommendation of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. Great, and sad, read.
