With her permisison, here are parts of two posts from Carol Chamblin (on Lactnet sabbatical right now) on her technique for moms with recurrent plugs and mastistis-near-misses. We'll have to dub this one the Carol Chamblin Lots of Lecithin Technique. She says: "I've had mothers with >12 mo. olds experience a recurrence of plugged ducts at this time. I'd assume related to the imbalance of pumping versus "natural weaning". Using a pump does not alter the body's milk volume quite as naturally as the baby does at the breast. So, mothers occasionally have a recurrence of plugged ducts, requiring the intense management of taking a Lecithin capsule on the hr. for 3-4 hrs. in a row. Usually this protocol resolves the plugs so readily that I refer to it as the "miracle treatment". It's quite unbelievable to them. "Oh, and if taking 1 capsule for 3-4 hrs. in a row doesn't resolve them, then repeat for another 3-4 hrs. Every time it has worked. And then go back to her maintenance dosage. Since Lecithin is naturally in our diet, she can stay on it for the entire time she expresses her milk. Some mothers can venture to stop taking it, and others can't as symptoms return." Back to Liz now. If any of you find this regimen helpful, let Lactnet know! Thanks.
