A few months ago I had an OP visit with a woman whose baby wasn't latching to her flattish, firm nipple/areolae, it was about PP day 5. I had also seen her inpatient. She came a week later for a follow-up OP visit and her nipple/areolae tissue was completely different! Soft, pliable, and baby latched on easily. It appears the areola area was edematous, and it took over a week to resolve.
