A few months ago I had an OP visit with a woman whose baby wasn't
latching to her flattish, firm nipple/areolae, it was about PP day 5.  I
had also seen her inpatient.  She came a week later for a follow-up OP
visit and her nipple/areolae tissue was completely different!  Soft,
pliable, and baby latched on easily.
It appears the areola area was edematous, and it took over a week to
resolve.
