<<When was this written? I was in nursing school 28 years ago, work in an LDRP unit now, and have never seen a baby turned upside down or held by it's feet after delivery.>> My daughter was held by the head nurse, upside down by her feet, to measure her length, despite my very loud objections. She weighed 10 1/2 pounds, and I was furious. I was told, "This is how we do it." My daughter is now 7 years old. << Have you seen a hospital birth lately?>> I have. Quite a few, actually. Most of my Student Nurse experiences served me to reinforce what I believed to be true (as one of those "radical childbirth instructors" as well as doula). Regarding baby pain, an interesting read I found is: Do we still hurt newborn babies? A prospective study on precedural pain and analgesia in neonates, (2003) Simons, van Dijk, Anand, Roofthooft, van Lingen and Tibboel. Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 157:1058-1064 <http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-04/ucl-usg040306.php> Until the US removes itself from the bottom of the maternal/newborn mortality pit, I will continue to question the practices suffered by the newborns in the US. And as long as I have to work with frustrated breastfeeding mothers and babies, I will suspect their birth experiences.
