I received a phone call from a mother of a 15 month old (mom is a physician's assistant and is very savvy and smart). When the baby was about 12 months, in late November, still nursing, not weaning, she developed a case of mastitis, had two courses of antibiotics. Pain and redness went away but not the lump. She finished the abx, redness came back. The lump was lanced with a drainage tube put in, drained well, closed up. A couple weeks later, the lump was back, the incision reopened on its own, and on Valentines' Day, they did an irrigation and drainage, general anesthesia, put in the drains. Another lump developed and they lanced another area higher up on the upper outer left breast in early March. This week the drain areas are leaking a brownish substance. No nasties culture out, but there are a lot of white blood cells she said mixed in with the substance which they told her was milk. 3 or 4 core biopsies have been done of the lumps-- cancer is ruled out. So she called me. Tis out of my experience area so I am writing you wise ones! I am putting a tap out to our state coalition for names of good breast surgeons so she can look for another opinion as her docs admit they are stymied. Does anyone have any suggestions? Questions to ask? Thanks in advance for your help.
