Wolf & Glass talk about a "mature swallow" that occurs starting at 6m of age; as I recall (don't have the book here), the oral peristalsis is part of the difference between the mature swallow and an infant swallow. Anyone know just what changes? Maybe that's why most of us can't gulp as fast as most of the infants we see. If the tongue is responsible for at least partially setting off peristalsis, how do NG tube eaters digest w/o tongue involvement? I always assumed that's why pacifier use during NG feeds improves digestion. Things that make you go "Hmmmm."
