Pam asks: <<1. How long after a baby is born is it safe for the baby to not eat? Assuming baby had one good feeding at birth, all vitals are normal, and glucose levels are still high, no signs of jaundice, etc.>> ************************************************ Please note, I'm not advocating the following, but it is helpful to know that any/all of you who were born in the US of A in a hospital 35 or more years ago MOST LIKELY were not fed for the first 24 hours of your life. And then you were given either sterile water or glucose water. And then, if you were lucky enough to be breastfed, you were allowed a full 2 minutes on each side for the first day. You most likely weren't supplemented, because 2 minutes on each side was adequate. By the time you were up to four minutes per side, you were over 48 hours old. And if you are Bill Gates, you've made a Gazillion dollars despite it all. So while I don't advocate it, and I want babies to eat often and early, just like we vote here in Chicago, I don't get terribly upset if they are too sleepy that first 24 hours as long as everything remains stable. HOWEVER, that said, I do have mom hand express and feed the baby whatever she can get from a spoon, and have her start pumping to tell the breasts that something is going to happen and start laying down prolactin receptors. And I want baby STS as much as possible rather than in the crib or down the hall in the nursery. Most of all I want people to stop saying "It's TIME to feed the baby" who is sound asleep and hasn't a rooting reflex to her name. And take the mittens off. Happy New Year, one and all!!
