I hope Jan now had a chance to read my clarification about my thoughts on use of alcohol from stemming from the advice that I used to give and then corrected about using moms feeling tipsy as a gauge for whether or not to feed the baby at the breast. If not, Jan - it wasn't meant as my response for the postings, but my pondering the implications of how one might interpret the old advice I learned. Second, I sometimes skip a step of clarification because I forget that its not obvious. Pumping and dumping is NOT used to remove alcohol. It is only used to alleviate the engorgement that might occur if mom drinks so much that the alcohol would still be in her milk in sufficient quantity at the next feeding. She should give the baby expressed milk from an appropriate alternative feeding device and pump to alleviate engorgement or maintain the milk supply until sufficient alcohol clears the system.
