Even though we are pretty wonderful, I imagine you wanted to get input from all the subscribers :-) Here's my 30 ml - how small is this 'small' premature? What is current corrected age? Would this baby be getting fortifier if it were the birth mother supplying the milk? Would it be an option to let the baby go on just her milk for a week or so, and see how growth was, or is this a really fragile newborn? It seems they should use the same guidelines as for any breastfed baby in determining the need for possible supplementary nutrition. Our large NICU has a small premature that has been adopted by a mom who is nursing a one year old. The question is will the milk contain all the nutrients a premature needs? Volume is not an issue. The Neo's are concerened about growth and development. They are giving the milk with fortifier added and are very willing to allow the mother to furnish the milk. Has anyone had this situation before and what did you do. I am inclined to think that the milk may revert back to colostrum since she is pumping just as it would for another baby but with her not experiencing a preg. will it be the same. Lois Mathews,R.N.
