Hi everyone, I am writing again to all you wise ones for advice. Iam trying to overcome the problem of bottle feeding as much as possible. Some of the staff is very good with encouraging the mom to bf only, but the other half in a round about way will offer bottles of formula without hesitation; or they're already in the crib even though there is a written policy in place that states " no formula bottles in a breastfeeding baby's crib". Now after reading Dr. Jack Newman's, "The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers" i decided to try out the method of "Supplementing Without Bottles". (P. 96). I have been doing this prn with alot of moms the past month & the results have been outstanding as far as the mom ending up successful at bf her infant, when i do the f/u phone calls. Mom's are happy with plenty of milk to go around & some of them had intentions of "DOING BOTH", now they are EXCLUSIVELY BF". I approached my Director & she was impressed & said let's make it a policy. I did this & I am now doing inservice with each of the staff members including the nursing techs. A couple of them stated this is not sterile. they feel that by cutting the nipple & introducing the #5 fr. feeding tube through the nipple hole requires us to touch & contaminate what the infant is taking. I really did not think anything was wrong with this process. I am using the scissors from the suture removal kit, & saving it in a biohazard bag, to cut the cross in the nipple. Also we are using a new feeding tube @ each feed. Is there any comments to help me out. Am I wrong? thank you for your time, Elaine Mirand RN, CCE, IBCLC, RLC Yonkers, NY *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
