Judith, this is called uric crystals and it is very normal in the newborn up to a week or more. It used to be associated with dehydration but that is not true. The kidneys of newborns are trying to conserve fluid output so that babies do not get dehydrated. Babies will have uric crystals and still can get dehydrated but you need to look at the baby as a whole and not just that one item.
