I don't know how 'true' it is if based on evidence and research, but I have  
heard nurses say the same things as the baby screams while mom waits for her  
baby to be returned to her.  When mom says please he is crying, she gets  told 
that is good -- it will help their lungs.  So, at least you are not  the only 
one hearing it, but I thought I remember hearing that this was nonsense  
also.  Then again, I was in an LDR where much of what was being  done did not 
resemble evidence based care and looked a lot more like "this is  the way we do it 
here".
