Subject:Crying clearing the lungs
Date:Sat, 02 Apr 2005 17:03:10 -0500

This is what we we taught in medical school - but there is absolutely no
evidence behind it. Crying may cause acidosis, drop oxygen saturations and
trigger pulmonary hypertension (persistent fetal circulation). This is a hard
doctrine to change as it has been taught by so many for so long! Babies do not
need to cry to clear their lungs - they need to be calmly feeding with Mom.
