Jennifer,
I had a mom baby pair like this a while ago and they stick out in my memory whenever I see a dyad as such. They very much wanted to breastfeed their baby and were willing to do what was necessary. Their baby could not stay on the breast for any length of sustained nutritive sucking. Consequently he needed to be fed and the parents found fingerfeeding easy to do initially. She pumped diligently and came back to see me regularly for assistance. It took about 4 weeks and the use of a nipple shield and some very deep assymetric latching to get his chin in the breast but he did start feeding better and better and mom went on to nurse him for 3 years.
