Claudia, I don't know the standard, even if there is one, and from whom.
However, I have been thinking about a checklist of sorts that the mother or
staff or both should check off PRIOR TO DISCHARGE.
Just thinking now off the top of my head:
___I know how to comfortably position my baby
___Baby latches effectively and w/o pain (or signs of a good latch)
___Swallows are seen/heard
___I know what to expect w/ my breasts/supply
___I know what to expect w/ diaper counts or I know how to tell baby is
getting enough
___I know how to manage engorgement
___I know how to prevent sore nipples
___I know how to express milk
___I know who to call for help

My idea is that mom can check off and she/nurse can initial. Anyone can
teach it, and if this is accomplished w/ observation of one feeding, ok.
Unfortunately sometimes I do get to obs. one feeding. Hopefully the staff
are reinforcing, and obs. some too.
