Thanks to all for the great responses and heartfelt concern for my friend's family. I have tracked her down a free Lactina rental through WIC (which I'm hoping she'll be eligible for, although she hasn't applied yet.) It helps that the IBCLC at WIC responsible for pump rental is a friend and also knows this mom, so will help her any way she can. She'll get another double kit from WIC, and I'll give her one of mine as well, so she can have 3 kits available to decrease her washing time hopefully. I think just supply and pumping issues-wise this mom is doing well and storing extra milk above his needs at this point. I may be back asking about getting baby to breast if he improves enough! Emotionally, mom and dad are having a hard time. As their family doc also, I will have the opportunity to work with them long-term. I'm glad that one thing I can say unequivocally in this situation is that providing her milk to this little one can only be a benefit to him, and to her own feelings as his mother! It's one thing that feels normal to her in this terrible situation.
