Kathy described that in the last NICU where she worked, they delay the use of EBM (expressed breast milk) after the colostrum state until 34 weeks, allowing for the potential CMV load to be handeled better by the preemies. Maybe Dr. Nancy Wright can enlighten us, does the California Perinatal quality Care Collaborative support this? I thought that if the mother was CMV positive that the baby would have already been exposed to the virus and receiving her breastmilk would not effect them to a much greater degree. Do any of the NICU's that fellow lactnetters work for also follow this policy?
