Dear Lactnet members; I have already searched the archives, and I see that there have been several episodes of threads about nipple piercing and breastfeeding. While these posts have helped my client, she has a problem that I haven't seen specifically mentioned. Here is the question: (with her permission), The woman is a 23 y/o primip, full term baby born 4 days ago by c/s. She is exclusively breastfeeding, a little dripping from the piercing sites, mother has medium sized breasts, normal nipple/areola, says her breasts are fuller today than yesterday. Baby latched well in my office, although she has a tendency to shallow latch. The tips of her nipples were a little pink, but not abraded or bleeding. Meconium changing, urine clear, mother is feeding on cue and is well read. She lives with her extremely supportive mother. She noticed a pain today during feeding, the same in both breasts, not sharp, but deep in the breast, and not dependent on positioning the baby or hours between feeds. The pain might be behind the piercings, although I did not see any redness around where she pointed to the pain, nor any hard lumps or suspicious skin. Today is the day that mature milk was visible. Does any one have experience with this? The only help I could give her was latch advise, and she claimed the pain did not improve. I am wondering if there could be scar tissue where the piercings healed and they are being stretched as the milk ducts fill. It seems that if this were the case and the ducts are filling that lumps would be obvious or engorgement in those areas would be easy to determine. Thanks for your help, Lizabeth J.
