I remember reading this in LLL's New Beginnings Magazine several years ago .
It said the word means "to quieten." To  make still, to silence. Pronounced
shtillen.

It stuck in my mind becasue it's the same root word as is used in "Stille
Nacht," the German version of the Christmas carol Silent Night. I could just
picture the mother of Jesus with a newborn at her breast, stillen.
